Community Art in Action

Community art has become a vibrant and essential part of Creatful’s creative health programme, and over the past year it has brought people of all ages together to make, imagine and connect in ways that strengthen wellbeing and community spirit. These projects aren’t just about making something beautiful; it’s all about belonging, confidence, shared purpose and the quiet joy of creating side-by-side.

Community art offers benefits that ripple far beyond the final piece. It helps people feel part of something bigger, especially those who may feel isolated or disconnected. Working collaboratively reduces pressure and perfectionism, allowing people to explore creativity gently and at their own pace.

It builds their confidence as individuals see their contribution valued within a larger creation. And it strengthens relationships across generations, cultures and lived experiences through shared making, conversation and play. For many of our participants, community art becomes a doorway back into connection, self-expression and hope creating high social value.

Last year’s highlights show just how powerful this work can be:

  • A boho wall hanging for Advance Charity, lovingly crafted by women who attend their women’s centre.
  • A joyful community weave with Growing Places, powered by children and scrap fabric.
  • A commemorative 200-year Watercress Line panel, created by women in our groups to celebrate local heritage.
  • The Heart of Hope Ukrainian HeArt exhibition, made by hundreds of local schoolchildren to show compassion and solidarity with our Ukrainian community.
  • World maps from scraps, including one for Big Green Week, symbolising unity and sustainability with Growing Places.
  • A VE Day quilt stitched by women across our groups in collaboration with Project 71.
  • The Be Kind mosaic, created with the women of Project W and now proudly displayed in their garden.
  • The Sweet mosaic, gifted to Springwood Community Centre’s tuck shop in gratitude for their support.
