Sustainability shame
Have you ever felt that pull of shame when you throw something away that still has some use in it, or when you realise you have put something in the wrong bin? You are not the only one. But sustainability is not about getting it right every single time. It is about doing what you can, when you can.
One of the most powerful things we do at Creatful is show how everyday household and community waste can be repurposed with care and imagination. In our groups, nothing is just rubbish. With our community we share ideas, collect resources and choose our arts and crafts materials mindfully, using a mix of purchased, donated and repurposed items.
Sustainability can be accessible rather than overwhelming. When we remove the shame of getting it wrong, we make more space for learning, curiosity and enjoyment.

And we are not perfect either. Sometimes we do not have the extra time to source the most sustainable materials. Sometimes we need to do a quick clear out to make space for new resources. We are doing our best, and that is all you need to do too.
Our approach to thrifty crafting is intentional. Many of the women we support face multiple disadvantages and we never want creativity to feel expensive or out of reach. By using materials that are already in people’s homes, we show that wellbeing does not require buying new things. It can begin with what is already in your hands. This simple shift reduces consumption, sparks imagination and helps people feel proud of what they create.
Behind the scenes, our donation network plays a huge part in keeping our environmental impact low. Local people, businesses and partners regularly pass on items that would otherwise end up in landfill: paper, fabric, jars, ribbons, magazines, craft supplies and more. These donations fuel our sessions, reduce our costs and keep materials in circulation for as long as possible. It is community sustainability in action, with everyone contributing what they can and nothing going to waste.
Our commitment extends beyond Creatful too. As Sustainability Lead at Growing Places, we support early years settings and community projects to embed greener practices. Children learn early that caring for the planet is joyful, hands on and part of everyday life. Those small seeds grow into lifelong habits.
Sustainability is not about perfection. It is about creativity, community and choosing to do what we can with what we have. At Creatful, we will keep championing those small, meaningful actions because when people feel empowered, the planet benefits too.
