In 2024, Project W opened its doors in Portsmouth to create a safe, holistic space for women facing addiction, homelessness, and the lasting impacts of trauma. The project is rooted in lived experience, ensuring that every woman who walks through the door is met with understanding, compassion, and practical support.

Every Wednesday and Thursday, women can drop in and access multiple services under one roof. Here, women can:

 Share a hot lunch in a welcoming environment
 Access courses with Stop Domestic Abuse
 Seek medical advice and support for recovery
 Meet with career workers to explore new opportunities
 Use the crèche, ensuring mothers can take part without worry

This holistic approach means women don’t have to navigate fragmented systems or repeat their stories over and over. Instead, they find everything they need in one supported space.

Creativity Without Barriers

Since Project W launched, I’ve had the privilege of running a creative group within the programme. Our group is simple but powerful, women can come exactly as they are. There are no expectations, no judgements, and no requirements.

Often, the women I meet are carrying unimaginable burdens, low self-esteem, poor mental health, and the scars of trauma and abuse. Through art, craft, and conversation, women begin to feel a sense of belonging. They rediscover comfort, build confidence, and start to see themselves as part of a community again.

Healing Through Belonging

The journey of recovery is never linear, and it’s rarely easy. But at Project W, women are reminded that they are not alone. They are supported by peers, professionals, and creative spaces that allow them to heal at their own pace.

Award Winning

Project W is still young, but its impact is already profound. By combining practical services with spaces for creativity and connection, it is helping women reclaim their lives and futures.

In November 2025 Project W received the Inclusive recovery city Group of the year award for its excellent contribution within recovery services in Portsmouth.

Project W is supported by many local services who are working together to make change that lasts like: Portsmouth City Council, Intuitive Thinking Skills, Society of St James, Creatful, Stop Domestic Abuse
